Those that follow the Sampalataya believe in the Almighty, known as Makagagahum, and his three aspects: The Creator known as Maykapal, the Preserver, the Equalizer known as Makapatag, and the Destroyer known as Makaubos. These three Aspects are sometimes revered on their own right, and cults have grown around them. Death cults and murder cults sprout from worship of Makaubos, while many panday see Maykapal as a patron god of sorts.
Makagagahum is based on Makagagahum recorded by Alcina in Ibabao/Samar in the 1600s, who spoke of Makagagahum (Almighty) alongside Makapatag and Makaubos, who Alcina kind of compared with the Holy Trinity of his own Catholic Doctrine.
Makagagahum in Gubat Banwa is a searing brand of Colonialism upon the Isles: once a God of its own, he was Twisted into the shape that now resembles the Bleeding God of the Pale Kings. This echoes the syncretism that Filipinos have performed to survive Christianity.
Not just that, but Makagagahum is a symbol and representative for the eventual imperialism inherited by those in the Filipino Elite, creating the semi-feudal and semi-colonial society that is the Philippines today.
It reflects the colonial violence of Filipinos wanting to be like their colonizers, the violence of Filipinos wanting to homogenize their cultures into a single "Filipino culture" because this is what the colonizers want them to do (and helps them capitalize on culture better)
In Gubat Banwa, Makagagahum is the God of the Virbanwans, the calcified and fantasized version of what imperial manila is today. Virbanwa wants to bring all the nations and cultures of The Sword Isles under them in the name of "unity" and "prosperity". A colonizer's dream.
